Was looking for the service items on my wife’s Rav4 30,000 mile check up on the internet, before I headed home so I could pick up supplies. Then I ran across some forum jockey spouting this:
http://www.rav4world.com/forums/96-4-3-…
“At 30,000 miles, for your protection, you should check and maybe replace all fluids in your !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! including transmission, brake, and coolant.”
Who in the world would suggest new fluids at 30,000 miles?!? You should never even have to change the brake fluid unless you’re tracking your car, in which case it’s to run a higher temp fluid. WTF is this non-sense?

on the forum....
Just follow the schedule in the book.

I am, but I needed to know what to pick up on the way home! Fortunately, that post also had a link to the real maintenance needed.

Well, brake fluid does absorb moisture and get otherwise weird over time, though much, much less than it used to. Coolant, also, has corrosion inhibitors that don’t do their job after a while. Transmission fluid, maybe if you have a tetchy transmission that sheds a lot of guff from the clutches and clogs itself unto death. If I were getting a ten year old car that I wasn’t sure of the provenance on, sure - all these would not be bad to change. 30k miles? Nah, bro. Not in most cases. Check? Maybe.

As for changing the brake fluid...make sure you do it occasionally. It builds gunk up in the system and causes problems later if you don’t.

Brake fluid is somewhat conditional. It absorbs water from the air (note that the top of the master can’t be fully sealed), and that water can boil under even moderate braking, altering pedal feel mid-brake (bad) or throwing off abs (bad) . If you live somewhere really dry, your brake fluid could last for ages. But common recommendation is 2yrs or 30k miles for most cars.
I’d never change AT fluid after 30k, but manuals generally like a 30k interval. They have a lot less fluid in them.

Water is a more immediate concern for brake fluid than “gunk.” It should be swapped every couple of years on a road car. And at least once a year on a track car.
This guy probably changes his synthetic oil every 3000 miles.

No need to make assumptions. But yeah, water is an issue for sure, but its been my experience that Toyota systems in particular get buildup on the passages and seals if you don’t.

If you’re a really meticulous owner, I don’t see why not. ATF at least every 50k is the only way to depend on a slushbox for 150k+ miles, and checking fluids is as easy as it gets.

brake fluid every 2 years , regardless of distance.
